This weekend Team Rappaport will descend upon Las Vegas for the annual International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) RECon show. This three day exhibition at the Las Vegas Convention Center attracts nearly 37,000 deal makers including Rappaport’s executives, brokers and leasing agents. Being that location is one of the pillars of our business, our booth is strategically located at the entryway of the south hall, C-13 South, the hub for discussing retail opportunities in DC, Maryland and Virginia.

On Sunday, May 20, Rappaport CEO and former ICSC Chairman, Gary D. Rappaport, will kick off RECon by teaching a class of more than 500 attendees about the skills, passion and risk tolerance needed to build a successful development company in his session titled Investing in Retail Properties and Structuring Partnerships. His book that he uses for the class is available here.

Undoubtedly, the most notable features we’re bringing with us are two of our current projects: Avec and Skyland Town Center.

Skyland Town Center is an 18.5 acre, mixed use space combining residential living and retail development. This highly anticipated project is currently under construction in an up and coming neighborhood of southeast Washington, DC and will provide much needed services and amenities to the community. CVS Pharmacy has already signed to join Skyland in Phase I which is already under construction. Skyland Town Center’s all-star team of leasing agents, Jim Farrell, Michael Leon and Thomas Bolen, will be keeping up the momentum as they showcase this project throughout the conference.

Avec is unique in that it’s the only building Rappaport has built, torn down, and redeveloped. Upon completion, Avec (once a strip mall named H Street Connection) will be an eight-story building combining stylish residential units and retail services just North of the U.S. Capitol. Expected to be completed by 2020, Avec serves as the connection between the rich history of H Street NE and the new development that has taken place there over the past decade. Stand-out Rappaport brokers Alex Shiel, Will Collins and Zach Elcano are working to find the best concepts to join the hottest development on H Street.

We are excited to introduce three new projects, Bethesda Place, New Carrollton and Broad and Washington.

Bethesda Place presents a rare opportunity for the largest block of retail space in the heart of Bethesda’s dense and affluent neighborhood. This 42,000 SF opportunity is adjacent to the new Marriott HQ, which will have 3,500 employees and a 12-story flagship Marriott hotel. The location gives direct access from Old Georgetown Road and has 140 dedicated retail parking spaces. In addition to extraordinary parking for this area, this location is a short walk from the Bethesda metro and benefits from the continued development of downtown Bethesda. Rappaport retail brokers Bill Dickinson and Michael Howard are hard at work to find the best fit for this rare opportunity.

More exciting things are also coming to the Orange line in Prince George’s County. The $1 Billion New Carrollton Metro Station project will feature a complete redevelopment of the 39 acres surrounding the station, bringing office, residential, retail and hotel business. Kaiser Permanente’s new corporate building, a 281 unit upscale multifamily building and new amenity filled offices make this project a capstone project for the county. Thomas Bolen, a new addition to the Rappaport team, is taking lead on this project as it continues to develop. Currently he is working to find restaurant space for the Phase I of the project which features the Kaiser Permanente office. This 1,570 SF restaurant opportunity will meet professionals hungry for fresh alternatives.

Broad and Washington in Falls Church is an exciting mixed-use redevelopment that will feature office, residential and retail. Broad and Washington’s State Theater sets the perfect stage for restauranteurs to join the project and be successful. Alex Shiel, a Rappaport Veteran with a knack for cultivating places, is looking for great restaurants to make Broad and Washington come alive.

Stop by our booth to meet some of our executive, leasing and brokerage teams and learn more about the services we offer at Rappaport. Not only do we manage and lease properties owned by Rappaport, institutions, families and others, but we also represent tenants such as Sephora, Peet’s Coffee, Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza, Baked Bear, as well as Cinepolis and SolidCore. Most importantly, though, is that no matter the service we provide, we pride ourselves on treating every property as if it were our own.
